So much can be
said about Annapolis' own musical femme fatales. Both are award winning
singer/songwriters, and have incredibly beautiful voices which blended
together are like marshmallows dipped in butter! |
|
5 |
|
Describing what
they play would be simpler if we asked what you want to hear. Their
repertoire pretty much covers it. OK, how about pop-rock, folk, R&B,
country, jazz…can we stop now? |
|

|
These ladies have
played the east coast, have countless recordings to their credit, and have
performed with just about every notable musician in our neighborhood and
then some. |
|
5 |
|
They can be heard
around town here and often on local, regional, and college radio stations.
Simply put, there's no lack of work for these Sirens. We're ecstatic they
have time for us! |

Whether it's urban contemporary or jazz that Meg Murray
chooses to do, the first thing that grabs is her voice. It doesn't hurt that she
can write, too. "Ready"
-- a song she penned for a production project with hip-hop producer Timbaland --
appears on her solo debut,
Ready, also featuring "A
Lover's Lament." "Starlight
and Champagne" is from the soundtrack of the
1995 play "Tipton." |

Meg Murray's new
holiday album is a wonderful compilation of traditional songs. Her jazzy
take on "My Favorite Things" is especially good. |

CD REVIEW
|
| Meg Murray |
| I'll Be Home for Christmas
|
|
Review by Dan Mollen Chesapeake Music Guide December 2003 New York’s loss is Maryland’s gain. After a brief professional dalliance
with renowned New York producer Timbaland (of Missy Elliott and Justin
Timberlake fame), Meg Murray came home to Annapolis to record her R & B
flavored CD “Ready” in November of 2002. And now, in a turn both prolific
and versatile, Murray returns with the jazz-inflected holiday treat “I’ll Be
Home For Christmas.”
|
|
 |
| This is the kind of seasonal record that Ella or the Velvet
Fog made back when singers knew the importance of phrasing. Remember
phrasing? Well, Meg does a fine job of crafting songs rather than
bludgeoning them to death in the manner of today’s American Idolized pop
singers. She’s like the bizarro Celine Dion or Mariah Carey in a parallel
universe - a universe where over-emoting and vocal gymnastics do not a fine
singer make. Although perfectly capable of running up and down the scale,
Murray has learned that the best notes are sometimes those left unsung. And
while most Christmas standards have been done to death, the combination of
stellar musicianship and exquisite taste here allows Murray to put her own
stamp on some time-honored favorites. “Have Yourself A Merry Little
Christmas” smoothly sets the jazzy tone for the rest of the record while
“Mistletoe & Holly” is just smoky enough to be saucy. Classy but not lacking
in verve, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” swings nicely, and “Blue Christmas”
positively aches. But it’s Murray’s take on “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,”
that is particularly inspired. Overlaying her own ethereal vocals over
Karner’s minimalist beat and Larry Melton’s atmospheric bass line, Murray’s
version is more than distinctive - it’s wistful, smart, and altogether
entrancing.
Not content with merely re-singing, Murray manages to breathe life into
old standbys, making “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” evocative of everything
Christmas is supposed to be – an elegant family affair that still swings.
Recorded within the cozy confines of The Compound in Arnold, a thoroughly
unpretentious studio that has seen its share of great musicians over the
years, and where Murray says, “great jazz just seeps out of the walls,” this
CD bears the mark of its intimate origins. Unified Jazz Ensemble’s Mike
Noonan lends his trademark warmth on the keyboards, and is nicely
complemented by bandmates John Pineda on bass and Chuck Karner on drums.
Warning: With an album this sophisticated and stylish, “I’ll Be Home For
Christmas,” may force you to throw a party that is as cool as this sounds.
Regardless, make sure to unwrap it before Christmas so Meg Murray can
provide the soundtrack to your holiday season in its entirety. Consider it a
gift to yourself.

Meg Murray
Ready to Play
By Maria Villafana
washingtonpost.com/MP3 Producer
Wednesday, October 15, 2003
Annapolis has a bustling music
community all its own and, members of this self-contained group do not
venture onto neighboring stages as often as they might.
On Oct. 24 two Annapolis singers
(and songwriters)
Meg Murray and
Angie Miller bring
their three-part show to the cozy college town emporium,
Andy's in
Chestertown.
Backed by a full band (Larry Melton on
bass; Ryan Diehl on drums, and an unnamed guest guitarist), Murray starts
the evening with a solo set of her urban contemporary tunes.
A slender blonde with a voice that
just keeps getting better, Murray was approached by producer Timbaland
(Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake's new solo release "Justified") a couple
of years ago.

She spent time in Manhattan recording
with him but the project was shelved. "The deal fell through mainly [due to]
timing. I was 30 going up against 18 year olds," says Murray. "I was with
the right people, at the right place, at the very wrong time."
The experience did open doors into the
world of hip-hop, as well as give Murray insight into the music business and
the studio process, which she says was "like going to graduate school."
Once her contract with Timbaland
expired and she regained control of her songs, Murray hunkered down in
Annapolis with Todd Kreuzburg to produce her fourth album, "Ready," which
she released in November 2002 on her own label, Girl Island Productions. The
album's title track and "A Lover's Lament" - what Murray describes as the
first happy love song she's ever written. "It's a wish" she says - can be
heard on her MP3 page.
Murray and Miller take on the
evening's third set at Andy's together. What comes clear during their duet
is that nothing can replace experience and talent when it comes to knowing
how to capture an audience. |

CD REVIEW

Meg
Murray READY |
|
by Michael Buckley
Chesapeake Music Guide
January 2003 |
Finally, the long anticipated new CD from the incredible Meg Murray has
arrived, and it was worth the wait. Meg Murray is a powerhouse of vocal
talent with a commanding stage presence. Over the years Meg has proven time
and time again that she can sing any style of music. This time Meg Murray
brings us a CD chock full of funky power pop, music to get your body moving,
with a healthy dose of tender ballads to round out the affair.
From the opening track, a Sly come Chaka, schwaka wakka groovalicious
"Ready" to the swirling guitar driven post psychedlia of "Turnaround" and
"Faith", Meg's new Cd rocks and thumps like a heart on fire. Then, with
grace and touch, the waters smooth out on "Perfect" and become reflective
with "The Words" and "Arrow".
Meg Murray creates a chorus of vocals, singing all the parts herself, and
the programming sometimes reflects instruments that may not be there through
the magic of computers and samples.
Meg Murray's "Ready" is co-produced by Todd Kruezburg and Meg Murray with
many musician collaborators contributing along the way. Guitars play a large
part in the mix when Kreuzburg is joined by Meg's longtime musical partner
Bryan Ewald and the results are stunning. |
